Introduction

Hello, my name is Jarad Anderson. I am a senior chemical biosciences and pre-medicine major. I am currently in the process of applying to medical school. A very exciting yet stressful time! I absolutely love it here at the University of Oklahoma and have really immersed myself in University College. I actually work in two different University College departments: The Office of Freshman Programs and the Student Learning Center. My role in Freshman Programs is to serve as a senior advisor for Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. My main job is to provide guidance and serve as a mentor for the current executive council. Additionally, in the Student Learning Center, I serve as a staff supervisor and study night coordinator. I plan large exam study nights for major uniform classes such as introductory chemistry, biology, and psychology. Last year over 2,500 student attended our study nights. Also, although it’s technically not a position within University College, I serve as a teaching assistant for University College Dean Nicole Campbell’s psychology course. I absolutely love my jobs and am so thankful for the opportunities they have given me. As a pre-med student, obviously, my goal is to become a physician. I have long been fascinated by both emergency medicine and surgery; which has peaked my interest in pursuing a career in trauma surgery. Throughout my time at the University of Oklahoma I have become interested in academic administration. I enjoy reading the Chronicle of Education and keeping up to date on the latest trends in education and teaching methods. As a long term goal, I would like to serve as dean of a medical college. Such a role would allow me to be involved in both clinical and academic medicine and put me in a position to focus on student success and development.

  1. Hi Anderson, i am so fascinating what you did so far. I am also a finance's senior, but i really don't have any experience in this field. I know you must put a lot of effort toward your goal. Look at what you have right now, i believe you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Again, congrats on your achievements.

  2. Hi Jarad!

I am also immersed in the University College! I am a peer teaching assistant for gateway. This is my second year doing it and I really love it even though the students may not love it as much as me. I have been thinking about becoming more immersed but I don't want to overwhelm myself with the amount of work that might come with it as I am enrolled in 21 hours this semester. I wish you lots of luck getting into medical school! If you believe in yourself you can do anything!

  3. Hi Jared!

First off your major of chemical biosciences may have just given me flashbacks to organic chemistry classes I took and failed miserably at. With those majors I am surprised that you have found time to be deeply involved in the University College programs you have mentioned. I find it hard myself finding time to join a club between working full time and my classes. Bravo to you! Your long term goal of wanting to be a dean of a medical college sounds super interesting. I sincerely wish you all the success in getting into medical school that you really, really want to go to! Be sure and have a good way to de-stress this semester while apply to everywhere, and remember that part of the process will all be over soon enough.

  4. Hello Jarad!

That's pretty great things to feel accomplished for. I've had many friends that graduated this last may in the Chemical Biosciences major field and most of them went off to pharmacy school! I wish you luck in your application to medical school and I hope with your great achievements and university involvement that you manage to get in and have a nice interview process! Not many people that go into medical work look at helping others in the education portion over the actual surgical and diagnostic portion.

  5. Oh, how great that you work with Dr. Campbell, Jarad! Please tell her hello from me! We came to OU the same year, MANY years ago. She is definitely someone you can learn a lot about teaching from; she came to OU specifically to help work on the undergraduate psychology curriculum, and now there is Jenel Cavazos too who is doing some great stuff with her big classes. Have you read Atul Gawande's books or essays? He is someone with some powerful insights about medical education and things we need to do better; his book Being Mortal was one of the best books I read last year. I hope this class can be a chance for you to learn about the storytelling traditions, and also to have a chance to explore some ideas about education too. It's something I am really interested too, as you have probably figured out already! :-)

  6. Hi Jarad! It's very nice to meet you. Wow, you are one busy person! I can't imagine being involved in all that with the double majors you have chosen! I'm not on campus and never will be, sadly, as I do all my courses online. I feel like I miss out on so much of the experience of OU this way. I did attend courses on campus at a different university when I was younger and the experience is just as important as the actual coursework in my opinion. I love OU so much, but feel like I'm missing out on part of it. But I wanted a degree from OU, don't live anywhere near campus and so this was the only way to do it. Good luck to you in your senior year & future endeavors!

  7. Hey Jarad! It seems like you are super involved on campus, which is so great! Congrats on being so close to graduating, how exciting! Do you have any plans on where you might want to go to medical school? Your major is so interesting and I'm sure requires a lot of hard work and determination. It was nice to meet you!

  8. Let me start by saying your resume is impressive! Haha Anyways, hi Jarad it's nice to meet you! I am also Pre-Med but will be applying next summer...any pointers on the application process? Trauma surgery is a really fascinating area to be in and experience all the unique cases that would walk through your ER. I wish you good luck on everything! Lastly just a side question, but when you're not doing school related events what do you like to do for fun?

  9. Hey Jarad! It seems like you’ve done a lot during your time here at OU and I’m impressed! Pre-med and chemical biosciences sound like really hard majors and not only doing that but also being super involved in University College and ALD is really awesome. I’m sure you’re literally always busy, but if you’re anything like me, being so busy is sometimes really nice because you feel like you have a purpose and it gives you so many opportunities to make friends and new memories!

  10. Hello Jarad,

I think that it is really cool to hear that you are studying to go into medical school I am sure that your schedule has been really stressful and packed! I have always wanted to do something in science because I have always found that really intriguing, but I was drawn to sociology-criminology. I think that mentor opportunity you have with freshmen is awesome and I bet you are incredibly impactful on those students. I think it is important to stay involved in ways in which you mentioned. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!

  11. Hi Jarad! Wow, your introduction is very impressive. That is awesome you are applying to med school! I can only imagine how stressful that can be. Since you enjoy/are interested in emergency medicine and surgery, I'm sure you watch Grey's Anatomy (and if you don't, definitely watch it!). I am a PR major but medicine has always fascinated me, so I absolutely love that show.
That is so great that you have found a passion in helping students as well. I think being a Dean of a medical school would be the perfect compromise for what you are wanting to do. Good luck with med school!

  12. Hi Jarad, it sounds like you have a very busy life. You seem very involved with OU which must be a very rewarding experience for you. It must be exciting to be applying for med school, I have some friends in the same boat and they are all very stressed about it but ready to take it on as well. I wish you the best of luck!

  13. Hello Jarad! Sounds like you've got all of your plans for your life set in place. Awesome! I bet you're really busy with all of that too. As a student-athlete, I understand that kind of stress, so props to you. Good luck getting into medical school and hopefully you'll be dean of a medical school one day!

  14. Hi Jared! You have some pretty big dreams and you are definitely putting in the work to make your dreams come true! I want to become a PA some day so I am also very intrigued with medicine. You sound like a busy guy and a hard worker! I look forward to reading more of your stories! Thanks for sharing!

  15. Hi, Jarad! I loved reading your introduction and learning more about you! It's so cool that we are able to learn more about our classmates since we don't actually have a physical class together. I have never been that interested in medicine, so I am always impressed when I meet someone who is. I think that people who want to work with medicine are really interesting and important, and I know that you will be able to accomplish all of your goals one day! Have a great rest of your semester!

  16. Hey Jared, it is nice to "meet you!" That is great that you have been able to find a way you will be able to combine your passions for medicine and academic administration. I haven't ever heard of the study groups for those classes that you mentioned, maybe because they weren't there when I was taking those classes, but they seem to be a really good idea. I know a lot of kids that struggled with those classes. I am sure that your study nights are a great resource for a lot of them. Keep up the great work!

  17. Hey Jarad. I don't think I could possibly handle all that school as well as working in two different areas at the school too. Too much school. I'm just barely hanging in there while I finish up my last year personally. I also had an interest in premed when I first came to OU, but that changed up pretty quickly. Anyway, have a great semester!

  18. Hi Jared. It is really cool that you are interested in surgery, thats a long journey ahead. I am also interested in medicine but I think I would like to go into pediatrics. It is really cool that you are in charge of forming large study groups, I'm sure that helps a lot of kids through their tough classes. Sounds like you a bright future ahead, good luck!

  19. Hi Jarad! I love getting to meet people who are so involved around campus. I've got to ask, how do you have time for it all? I think it's pretty neat that you spend so much time helping others and that you hope to continue to do the same. We need good docs to teach other people and help in administrative roles, and I can see you doing just that. Best of luck with the rest of this year and your continued schooling!
